NZ sex industry advertising & business reality

Someone forwarded me a copy of a post made today on the forum site owned/controlled by NZ's dominant escort listing site.

I have no involvement with that post or anyone behind it & have to admit that my initial reaction was one of wondering what is behind such an act of provocation. Then again the last time the two parties tangled (and I'm taking wild stab in the dark as to who is behind tonight's post) it was a lay down messier to the defendant because the complainant had no basis of law for their case & it seems "cut a few corners" of law & process in taking the matter to the high court in the first place. Anyway, that is pure personal opinion based on information posted on the open internet & as I said at the outset I am in no way involved so will remain an intrigued bystander.

The second reaction was based on a post I'm working on regarding the economic reality of the NZ sex industry. In this particular instance why is it that a single business can dominate and control the business the way they do ?

I'm sorry good people of the sex industry, the answer is sadly simple - few sex workers in this country run their involvement as a true business. If they did far more would look at the real cost/benefit of listing with such a site especially when they understand the terms & conditions of that site (some of which many believe are unenforceable under NZ law but few NZ sex workers are going to expose their lives in public court or pay the substantial cost of starting the necessary action)  and compare it to other options or more importantly if they are getting the real return on investment. If they did so they would reconsider what for some is more than they walk away with in weekly profit.

So is the real issue the dominant & openly aggressive listing site player or the realities of the lives of many sex industry workers ? The latter wins by an absolute majority in my opinion, the rationale for this is as follows:
  • As I've touched on in earlier posts many sex workers have insecurities & secrets in their lives that mean they will avoid public exposure and confrontation at any cost.
  • As touched on above woefully few run their sex work as a true business, many just hoping that they will earn enough to pay the bills.
  • The people behind the site have clearly done their homework & like it or not (I choose not but my vote doesn't count) they work the market reality for their benefit.
No doubt another ugly battle will ensue, more than likely unwitting & unwilling sex workers will get dragged into the middle of it & as is normally the case the winners will be the lawyers not the hard working industry providers.

  1. Dare i post a comment? I am one of the woefully few who DO run their business as a business.

HOWEVER we are fighting for an industry that will allow more to run their businesses as such - and then The PEPSI of the industry will rise and give the COCA COLA of the industry a kick in the arse! and we will have more giants to deal with!!

But competition is all good in my eyes.
